Mobilization with Movement (MWM) for Hip Flexion in Supine

Purpose: To increase pain free ROM in the hip (flex, IR, ER)

Start: The patient starts in hooklying with the affected leg bent.

Procedure: The therapist stands to the side of the patient. The therapist wraps the belt around their glutes and around the patient’s proximal thigh. The therapist then can lean back creating a lateral glide at the hip joint. The therapist can use their hands to block the knee so that the glide occurs only at the joint. The hip can be moved throughout the desired ROM while maintaining the glide as appropriate.

Mobilization with Movement (MWM) for Hip Flexion in Quadruped

Purpose: To increase pain free ROM in the hip (flex, IR, ER)

Start: The patient starts in quadruped.

Procedure: The therapist wraps the belt around their glutes and then around the patient’s proximal thigh. The therapist can lean back to create a later glide and use their hands to block at the patient’s torso. With the glide maintained the patient can move in and out of pain free hip flexion progressively pushing into end range.
