Midtarsal Non-Thrust Manipulation

Purpose:  To increase mobility of the midtarsal joints.

Procedure:  With the patient in hooklying, place the foot at the edge of the mat so that the talus sits on the edge of the mat and the rest of the foot hangs off the end.  The therapist should use one hand to stabilize the foot at the talus, while using the other hand to grasp the tarsals just distal to the talus. The therapist can provide dorsal and plantar glides, or rotational forces as indicated.

Comments:  The therapist can move distally with the stabilizing and mobilizing hands to mobilize the more distal row of the midtarsal joint.
