Hip Distraction (Lateral)

Purpose:  To increase mobility and decrease pain in the hip.

Start: Patient in supine with symptomatic leg flexed at the hip.  Therapist stands to the side of the patient.

Procedure:  The therapist places the belt on the medial surface of the patient’s thigh near the hip crease, allowing the patient to move the belt as close to the hips as possible, with the other end of the belt strapped behind the therapists pelvis.  The therapist places their hands at the patient’s knee and ankle to provide counterforce and to control the degree of hip flexion while providing a lateral distraction force with the belt.
