Glenohumeral Joint Superior-Inferior Glides

Purpose: To restore glenohumeral elevation.

Procedure: Patient starts in supine.  The therapist stands at the patient’s side, supporting the patient’s arm off the table.  The therapist should be superior to the patient’s arm. The therapist supports the patient’s elbow with one hand and places the other hand along the superior aspect of the proximal humerus, just distal to the glenohumeral joint.  The therapist can provide glides in an inferior/caudal direction as indicated by the restriction.

Comments:  The patient’s arm may be prepositioned to end-range abduction to enhance the effectiveness of the glides.
