Glenohumeral Joint AP Glides

Purpose:  To restore mobility to the glenohumeral joint.

Procedure:  Patient in supine with a towel roll under the scapula just proximal to the glenohumeral joint.  Therapist stands at the patient’s side, supporting the patient’s arm off the table. The therapist supports the patient’s elbow with one hand and places the other hand along the anterior aspect of the proximal humerus, just distal to the glenohumeral joint.  The therapist can provide glides in a posterior direction as indicated by the restriction.

Comments:  The patient’s arm can be prepositioned into varying degrees of glenohumeral abduction, internal rotation, or external rotation while applying glides.  Posteriorly directed glides have been demonstrated to improve both internal and external glenohumeral rotation.
