First Rib Non-Thrust Manipulations (Supine)
Purpose: To restore first rib mobility and the decrease pain.
Procedure: With the patient in supine, the therapist uses their stabilizing hand to support the patient’s neck. The therapist places the radial surface of the index finger of the mobilizing hand on the patient’s first rib and provides an inferior/medial force as indicated.
First Rib Non-Thrust Manipulations (Seated)
Purpose: To restore first rib mobility and the decrease pain.
Procedure: With the patient seated, the therapist provides passive flexion and contralateral side bending to the patient’s cervical spine. The therapist provides an inferior/medial force as indicated using the radial surface of the index finger of the mobilizing hand.
